The theme of the upcoming Fall 2016 issue of the UBCMJ pertains to Mental Health. Psychological well-being is an integral yet often overlooked aspect of health care. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health reports that 1 in 5 Canadians experience mental health or addiction issues in any given year, and mental health is one of the leading causes of disability in Canada. The aim of this issue is to elucidate the specific mental health challenges faced by various populations in Canada, and to explore the progress that has been made through the bridging of previously distinct fields including psychiatry, neurology, and neuroscience itself. Furthermore, we hope that this issue helps to tackle the stigma against mental illness, and also helps to equip future health care providers with added insight and knowledge in addressing an important component of their patients’, and their own health.
